Higher-spin gauge theories provide interesting generalisations of gravity by gauge fields of spins higher than two. Via holography they correspond to conformal field theories with conserved higher-spin charges, and there are indications that they are related to string theory in the tensionless limit. In this talk I give an introduction to the formulation of higher-spin gauge theories in three space-time dimensions, and I discuss their asymptotic symmetries which lie at the heart of the higher-spin AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence.
